Principal / Director, Architecture

Kevin Hanvey

Architect AIBC, AAA, MRAIC

What made you choose a career in architecture?

When I was 10 or 11, I was given a book featuring Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous house, Fallingwater. From that time on, architecture was the only career I was interested in. Is having that kind of career certainty at such a young age a blessing or a curse? It depends on what day of the week you ask me.

What kind of projects do you take on?

As Principal and Director of Architecture, I lead our talented team of architects, interns and technologists in a range of project types, including institutional, commercial, industrial and residential uses. I have a special interest in the educational sector and have led the design of numerous school projects in both the public and private sectors.

How are you preserving the heritage of Vancouver?

I’ve been the chair for both the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver Advisory Design Panels as an appointee of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia, and I was recently appointed by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia to the City of North Vancouver’s Heritage Advisory Committee. We are focused on public education and awareness, offering incentives to encourage conservation, introducing regulations and legislation to protect the heritage inventory, and assisting Vancouver council with public education and awareness activities.
