Pablo Yuste

Architect AIBC, LEED AP

What do you find most challenging or rewarding about your role?

In a word: People. I’ve learned that we cannot be efficient with people, only processes. So, for me, developing relationships with people is the most challenging and rewarding part of coming to work every day. When people’s needs are taken care of, great things happen: from personal and professional growth to shared pride in a job well done.

What are the most important skills you bring to your job?

The ability to break down barriers blocking progress. I typically overcome these challenges through communication and the ability to see through the complexity to find the underlying logic of a need, a requirement, or a solution.

How has your experience prepared you for a career as an architect?

Prior to becoming an architect, I worked as a Park Warden in Canada’s rugged National Parks. As in nature, good design results in solutions that are fit for purpose. As one of two architect principals overseeing Omicron’s varied body of design work, I guide multi-disciplinary teams as we unlock value for clients through a design process that seeks a deep understanding of the essential requirements of the project.

Recognizing that what we take out of a project can be as important as what we put in, I am constantly challenging our project teams to edit out the unnecessary: realizing the project’s desired outcomes with less clutter and more clarity. Elegant solutions that are fit for purpose – that’s a better way!
