On Friday we attended the IDIBC Shine Awards 2017 at Canada Place and we were pleasantly surprised to find out we got an Award of Merit in the Workplace Total category for our work on the Intracorp office. It was a full house event, with a record attendance of 280 people. Our own Patricia Desmet, president IDIBC, and actor Russell Ported hosted an evening full of celebration and wit.
The IDIBC Awards of Excellence celebrate the highest standards of interior design and this year they included 11 categories. The judges reviewed the projects and evaluated each of them in terms of creativity and effectiveness of design. For our Intracorp entry, the judges commented on the concept of “origami – executed so beautifully and so simply”, and on the entrance and reception, “impressive, the strongest piece of space.” Our entire design team was there to receive the award, starting with Lead Designer Patricia Desmet: Taylor Culler, Ayla Calverley and Edwin Garcia.
Intracorp has a strong identity and culture, so they wanted their new head office to reflect those ideas. After our visioning sessions, the concept of origami emerged as the best representation of these. It worked on many levels:
The best feature to illustrate these concepts is the ceiling detail in the reception area. With its linear lights, it emphasizes the simple folds of the origami. The rest of the space is equally informed by this concept, resulting into a workspace that is bright and airy, a perfect backdrop for Intracorp’s original artwork and accent furniture. Even the carpet pattern in the employee work area was customized to reflect the origami folds, which run the entire floorplate.
