Omicron was engaged to provide architecture services for the new Aspengrove School in Lantzville, BC (near Nanaimo), a pre-K to 12 independent, International Baccalaureate School. Phase 1 is the first one of a three-phase development that features the first permanent structures commissioned by the school. The Phase 1 building features core facilities (gym, music room(s), multi-purpose classroom(s) and administration spaces) and is the fulcrum of the overall development. Future phases include the Middle Years Program and Diploma wings.

Sustainability

Aspengrove was designed as a simple cubic form not only for cost efficiency but also for its energy efficient shape (maximum volume enclosed to minimum surface area), form, and massing on the site. Limited glazing on the north and east façades provide enough natural daylighting for the interior spaces while also limiting heat loss through the windows. On the west façade, extensive glazing is used at the gym to not only provide natural daylighting, but also to connect the kids to the natural environment that surrounds them on this unique campus built in the middle of the forest.
