Spruce Street Transfer Station

01 AT A GLANCE

The Spruce Street Transfer Station is an expansion of Ecowaste’s business in the Lower Mainland, collecting construction and demolition debris before transporting it to the main Ecowaste facility in Richmond for processing.

02 BEFORE

The site was previously occupied by a wood processing facility that produced wood waste, which piled throughout the site. There was significant damage to the building, the asphalt and the storm piping below grade. The City of New Westminster was concerned about having this debris in the middle of the Brewery District, as a view for the high-rise residents and skytrain travelers.

03 NEW LIFE

Omicron worked with Ecowaste to clean up the site and remove the waste. We had to scope out the whole storm system and regrade most of the site. Structural upgrades were needed for the necessary openings throughout the building. Omicron worked with the City of New Westminster to develop an expedited Building Permit and Development Permit process, so Ecowaste can start operating early.

04 DESIGN INFORMED BY RESEARCH

The two issues we needed to consider were that the previous facility had a different purpose and the trucks lining up would back up on to Spruce Street. In order to create the most functional and efficient design, we worked with the operational data from the old facility to develop a report which informed the design of the new facility. It shaped many aspects, from its size and structure, to the number of scales and the size of the push floor.
