An energy efficient, flexible building design.

This is the new Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty and Offices of the Dean of Applied Science building at the University of British Columbia. It is in daily use by approximately 700 faculty members, researchers, administrators and students.

The building design addresses key issues of spatial flexibility; environmental sustainability; and contextual integration with other facilities. Open plan organization allows for highly flexible lab space and anticipates the ever-changing needs of users.

The building is a stimulating learning environment, with generous expanses of glass enhancing views. Common area activity is centred around atriums which invite people to meet and relax informally.

The building uses in-slab radiant heating and cooling. Test simulations indicate it will consume 45% less energy than a traditional plan. The architecture was provided in partnership with Architects Alliance
